Let’s look at what these machines are and what benefits they provide.

Treadmill

A treadmill consists of an endless belt on which a person can walk or jog with or without changing pace. A sturdy deck supports it and it is propelled either by an electric motor or by the user. It generally has some shock absorption system, usually rubber cushioning, to minimize stress on your joints.

Using a treadmill will speed up your metabolic rate. This allows your body to absorb and utilize greater quantities of your nutrients. It will also help stabilize your blood pressure and blood sugar and increase your energy level.

When using a treadmill to burn fat and lose weight, it’s best to exercise daily.

A treadmill helps you burn more calories by increasing your exercise frequency. It gives you a LOT of workout versatility. You can start with a slow walk and then speed it up as your body gets into better shape.

There are also various incline levels to provide extra resistance when you become more advanced. By using the large muscles of the legs, a treadmill helps you burn more fat calories.

You can find a wide variety of treadmills to fit your lifestyle and price range that can be delivered directly to your home.

Elliptical Trainer

Elliptical trainers are exercise machines that combine a treadmill’s natural stride and the simplicity of a stair climber. On an Elliptical trainer, you stand comfortably in an upright position while holding onto the machine’s handrails.  You then stride in either a forward or reverse motion.

The elliptical trainer burns more calories than the treadmill or the exercise bike. With an elliptical cross trainer, you get the benefits of both aerobic and resistance exercises without wear and tear on your joints. It provides a great cardio workout that pumps your heart to the max without the stress on your joints.

It uses all of the muscles of the lower leg. Therefore, you will strengthen and build your lower legs.

This is an ideal workout for those exercisers who are overweight and do not want to jog.

Exercise Bikes

You can use two types of exercise bikes: upright bikes and recumbent bikes. Upright bikes simulate the action of a real bike, except you do not go anywhere. On the other hand, Recumbent bikes have bucket seats that have the pedals out in front of you.

Exercise bikes are great for cardiovascular fitness and toning or building your thighs. The recumbent bikes are perfect for toning your butt. Being stationary, you can enjoy your favorite magazine or TV program while working out.

For overweight people, the recumbent bike offers bucket seats which can be more comfortable than traditional uprights. This type of bike is more ergonomically correct than a standard upright exercise bike. It effectively improves aerobic capacity and burns fat. Plus, it offers more back support and may be a little more comfortable to those people with lower back pain.

Rowing machines provide a whole-body aerobic workout: arms, shoulders, back, abdomen, legs, heart, and lungs. It also builds muscle strength and endurance in addition to the aerobic benefits. It improves your whole cardiovascular system with a low-impact workout.

Other benefits include improved flexibility and muscle strengthening in the arms, abdomen, and back.

There are two types of rowing machines. A hydraulic machine uses a piston to provide resistance. With a cable-driven machine, your pull spins a flywheel which produces a smooth action similar to rowing on water.

Since this is a low-impact activity, the risk of injury is lower than with some other rowing techniques.

Steppers

Steppers are available as simple hydraulic steppers or as computerized stair steppers. It tones the buttocks, thighs, and hips. These areas tend to “balloon” from too many calories and not enough exercise. Stair stepper workouts are serious calorie burners. 1. Back in the time I still went to a gym (I lived in the Netherlands then and there were several to choose from nearby) I have tried all the machines you describe. Especially the elliptical one was hard to do but very good for my condition!

Nowadays I don’t go to a gym, mainly because the only one I found here had music on so loud that my ears started squeaking. I am thinking of buying one or two machines to put in the basement, I don’t know yet. But if I do decide your article is a good reference to come back to. Thanks!

    1. Thanks for reading and commenting. Many people have shifted to working out at home as well. During the initial lockdown from Covid, I put together a pretty nice home gym. I’ve gotten fairly comfortable now with my routine and rarely go to the gym myself much anymore.

  2. Thank you for writing about these exercise machines, especially the parts of the body that they work for and what it entails, as far as weight loss is concerned. This way, one would know the best one to go for, as it pertains to needs.

If I were to pick, I like the elliptical trainers in particular because it gives one the function of the treadmill machine as well as climbing stairs, as you so rightly informed.
My other fav is the upright bikes because it’s stationary, effective and has a perk of allowing one enjoy a TV program. Lol.

Now to summon up the will…

    Cheers,

  3. Hi Lee, thank you for the overview of the best machines to lose weight. It is good to see a collection of all machines that one can use and a bit of understanding which one helps more than the other. Of course there are more differences to it: the position and what exactly it trains, etc.
For me the most favourite remain the steps. Almost the same as the steppers but just more static and only one big piece of steps 🙂 For some reason it just gives me the sense of mini-dancing, great aerobics and tonifies the body overall.
I think steps remain my favourite given that I have the option to use a real bike in my daily life and I live close to a park so can go outside for running.

    Thank you for the article.
